Differences Between Activated Carbon and Iron Removal Carbons for Water Treatment

Iron removing active carbon can remove iron in the +2 and +3 oxidation states from water, indicating its ability to eliminate soluble iron and ferric salts in water. Even a good level of iron-removing active carbon can also remove other heavy metals in water, including manganese and arsenic (III). The mechanism for removing iron or manganese or heavy metals, including arsenic removal, by active carbon involves the oxidation, hydrolysis, co-precipitation, and adsorption of Fe(II) and Mn(II) or heavy metals, transforming them into Fe(III) and Mn(IV), respectively.

Active carbon can only remove iron, manganese, and heavy metals from water through adsorption, and its adsorption capacity is very weak and non-renewable. Therefore, active carbon cannot be used for removing iron from water. In contrast, iron-removing active carbon is renewable through backwashing and has a very high iron removal capacity.

Concentration Value and Lifespan:

Iron-removing active carbon can remove low to high concentrations of iron and manganese, depending on the percentage of MnO2 coated on the active carbon. A good iron-removing active carbon can remove 30 ppm iron or 20 ppm manganese from one column, 60 ppm iron or 40 ppm manganese from two columns, and 100 ppm iron or 60 ppm manganese from three columns. A column filled with iron-removing active carbon operates at 10-20 M/h, and the backwash rate is 25-30 M/h. Their lifespan is approximately between 5 to 10 years.

In water treatment, normally, 8*30 mesh active carbon is used, but 8X30 granular carbon can be used in water filtration systems, although its capacity to remove iron is very weak. 14/30 or 14/40 iron-removing active carbon is used for removing iron in water treatment systems.
